Notice at collection for United States residents
When you join the Lawryse waitlist we collect your name, email address, law firm name, firm size band and your answers to a short survey, plus basic technical information about your visit. We use it to manage the waitlist, email you once when Lawryse membership opens in the United States, understand demand and keep the site secure. We send further updates only if you tell us in the survey that you want them. We do not sell or share your personal information. We keep waitlist information until you ask us to delete it, or for 3 years after our last contact with you. Sections 6 and 7 explain your rights and how to use them.
1. Who we are and who this Policy covers
Lawryse (Pty) Limited ("Lawryse", "we", "us") publishes Lawryse, a legal publication with articles, guides and professional connection tools. This Privacy Policy covers the United States waitlist website (waitlistusa.lawryse.com), the United States edition of lawryse.com, and the emails and messages connected to them.
It applies to visitors, people who register for the waitlist (attorneys, other legal professionals and members of the public), newsletter subscribers and people who contact us. Lawryse is a publisher. It is not a law firm and does not provide legal services.
Privacy contact: Alice Edmunds, Lawryse (Pty) Limited. Email: enquiries@lawryse.com.
2. Information we collect
| Where it comes from | What we collect |
|---|---|
| Waitlist registration | First and last name, email address, law firm name, firm size band, the time and wording of your consent, and your answers to the survey questions (for example which features interest you, how often you would use Lawryse and your views on pricing). |
| Website visits | IP address, browser and device type, the pages you view and how you arrived, approximate location (country or region worked out from your IP address), and security logs. |
| Subscriptions and emails | Your email address, your subscription choices, and records that an email was sent, opened where measurable, or unsubscribed from. |
| Messages you send us | Whatever you include in an email or form message, and our reply. |
We do not ask for, and you should not send us, sensitive information such as Social Security numbers, financial account numbers, health information, government identification or precise location. We do not knowingly collect sensitive personal information.
3. Where we get information
- Directly from you, when you register, subscribe or contact us.
- Automatically from your browser or device when you visit the site.
- From our service providers, for example confirmation that an email was delivered.
4. How we use information
- To add you to the waitlist, confirm your registration and email you once when Lawryse membership opens in the United States.
- To understand demand and shape the product, using your survey answers in aggregate and individually.
- To send updates, previews and announcements only if you have agreed to receive them (for example by answering yes to staying updated in the survey), and necessary service messages.
- To run, secure and improve the website, prevent spam, fraud and misuse, and keep records we need.
- To respond to your questions and requests, including privacy requests.
- To comply with the law and to establish, exercise or defend legal claims.
5. How we share information
We share personal information only as needed with:
- service providers that act for us under contract, such as website and database hosting, authentication, email delivery and list management, security and analytics providers;
- professional advisers, auditors and insurers, who are bound by confidentiality;
- courts, regulators or law enforcement when the law requires it or to protect rights, safety and security;
- a successor business if Lawryse is reorganised, merged or sold, subject to this Policy; and
- anyone else at your direction or with your consent.
We do not sell personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising or targeted advertising. We have not sold or shared personal information in the past 12 months. We do not use waitlist information to make decisions that have legal or similarly significant effects on you.
6. Your United States privacy rights
Several states, including California, Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia, Texas, Oregon and others, give residents rights over their personal information. Lawryse is a small publisher and may not meet every law's thresholds, but we choose to give these rights to every United States resident:
- Know and access: ask what personal information we hold about you and get a copy.
- Correct: ask us to fix inaccurate information.
- Delete: ask us to delete your personal information.
- Portability: receive your information in a common, usable format.
- Opt out: of the sale or sharing of personal information, targeted advertising and profiling. We do none of these, and we treat a Global Privacy Control signal as an opt-out request.
- Limit sensitive information: we do not collect it, so there is nothing to limit.
- Withdraw consent at any time, including unsubscribing from emails.
- No retaliation: we will not treat you worse for using these rights.
How to make a request. Email enquiries@lawryse.com with the subject "US privacy request" and tell us what you want. To protect you, we will check the request against the email address on our records and may ask you to confirm from that address. An authorized agent may act for you with your written permission. We do not charge for requests. We respond within 45 days and may extend that once by up to 45 more days if we tell you why.
Appeals. If we refuse or limit a request, reply to our decision with the word "Appeal" within 60 days and a person who was not involved will review it and respond in writing within 60 days. If you are still not satisfied, you can contact your state attorney general.
7. Notice to California residents
In the past 12 months we have collected the following categories of personal information, for the business purposes in section 4, and disclosed them only to service providers:
| Category | Examples | Sold or shared |
|---|---|---|
| Identifiers | Name, email address, IP address | No |
| Professional information | Law firm name and firm size band | No |
| Commercial information | Waitlist registration and survey answers about features and pricing | No |
| Internet or network activity | Pages viewed, referring page, device and browser type | No |
| Approximate geolocation | Country or region derived from IP address | No |
| Sensitive personal information | None collected | Not applicable |
We keep each category for the period in section 11. California's "Shine the Light" law lets California residents ask which categories of personal information we disclosed to third parties for their direct marketing; we make no such disclosures. Nevada residents may opt out of the sale of covered information; we do not sell it.
8. Email and CAN-SPAM
Joining the waitlist is not a subscription. We send a confirmation, one email when membership opens, and further updates only if you have opted in. Our marketing emails identify us as the sender, include a valid physical postal address for Lawryse and give a clear way to unsubscribe. We honor unsubscribe requests promptly and always within 10 business days. We will not sell or transfer your address to others after you unsubscribe. You may still receive necessary non-marketing messages, for example a reply to a request you made.
9. Cookies and similar technology
The waitlist site uses necessary first-party cookies and similar technology for security and to remember limited choices. We also use first-party analytics that count page views and button clicks on our own systems. We do not use advertising cookies, cross-site tracking or social media pixels. If we add analytics or advertising tools that change this, we will update this Policy and offer the choices the law requires. Browser settings can block cookies, but some functions may then not work.
10. Where information is processed
Lawryse is based in South Africa. Our main database and authentication are hosted in Ireland, and our providers for website hosting and delivery, email and file storage may process information in the United States, the European Union, South Africa or elsewhere. By using the site you understand that your information will be transferred to and processed in countries that may have different data protection laws from your own. We require our providers to protect personal information under contract and to use it only for our purposes.
11. How long we keep information
| Record | How long |
|---|---|
| Waitlist registration and survey answers | Until you ask us to delete them, or for 3 years after our last contact with you, whichever comes first. |
| Emails and delivery records | Up to 24 months. |
| Security and technical logs | Up to 24 months, longer only if needed to investigate an incident. |
| Messages you send us | Up to 3 years. |
| Records we must keep by law | For the period the law requires. |
When a period ends we delete or de-identify the information, subject to secure backup cycles.
12. Security
We use reasonable technical and organizational safeguards, including encrypted transmission, access controls, authentication, logging, backups and supplier controls. No online system can be guaranteed completely secure. If a breach affects you, we will notify you and any regulator as the law requires.
13. Children
The waitlist and this site are for adults. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13, and we do not sell or share the personal information of anyone under 16. If you believe a child has given us personal information, email enquiries@lawryse.com and we will delete it.
14. Links to other sites
The site may link to other websites, such as government sources cited in articles. We do not control and are not responsible for their privacy practices.
15. Changes to this Policy
We review this Policy at least once every 12 months and may update it when our services, providers or legal duties change. We will tell you about material changes by email or a notice on the site. The effective date at the top shows the current version.
